Hokkaido: A Tale of Light and Snow
This series of images invites you into the serene and ever-changing landscapes of Hokkaido, Japan. Captured over the course of one extraordinary day, these black-and-white images highlight the quiet beauty of snow-covered hills, solitary trees, and fleeting wildlife encounters. The series is titled Hokkaido: A Tale of Light and Snow because the day unfolded like acts in a play, with dramatic shifts in light, weather, and mood. Snowstorms would curtain the landscape, only to be pulled back moments later to reveal brilliant skies and perfect light.
Each photograph is presented as an “act,” with titles such as Hokkaido: Act I through Hokkaido: Act XIV. Together, they tell a visual story of discovery, patience, and fleeting beauty. The combination of pristine snow, shifting skies, and minimalist compositions allowed me to create some of my favorite images to date—culminating in two encounters with red foxes that felt like the perfect encore.
This gallery reflects my passion for exploring landscapes in all their extremes, embracing discomfort, and capturing the moments where nature and emotion meet. I hope these images resonate with you and bring a piece of Hokkaido’s magic into your life.
